Flights

For those just tuning in we have been on the hunt for some well priced tickets from Vancouver, Canada to Managua, Nicaragua so we can head out on an adventure through the beautiful country. Well, we have finally booked our tickets to Nicaragua! We are going for 3 whole weeks and are going to explore a fairly good chunk of the country.

Booking flights is always the most stressful part but we got a good deal. To do so involved monitoring flight costs for 2 people from Vancouver, Canada to Managua, Nicaragua for about a month. Flights with great times and less stops ran about $3000 CAD for the two of us round trip. We didn’t buy those. We got a flight with multiple stops. The flights we purchased are fairly direct direct and they seem to be the same route and stops as all the expensive flights, the way back however involves 7 hours waiting at LAX during the middle of the night. Can’t wait, especially as that is our favourite airport too! (sarcasm). All said and done we got tickets for under $2K CAD, woot. Since Nicaragua will let our dollar go quite far the flights are by far the most expensive portion of the trip, it only gets better from here.

For booking flights we ended up using expedia.ca (where we almost always end up for flights at a good price). Cheaptickets.com had a better price and a better flight but once we tried to buy them they magically disappeared, became more expensive and a much worse flight. Hopefully the flights all work out, but no matter what both days will be very long travel days. 13 hours of flights to get there and then of course traveling to and from airport and arriving early etc. Coming back 16 hours of flight/wait time in airports. I’m not looking forward to the flying portion of the trip.

Well the flights we bought are not the most amazing on time, the price was right. With enough work and time we find that you can usually find flights for a ‘discount’ rate if you are patient and dedicated. Last minute flight deals might also get you a great deal, but planning a trip where you have to book places on the destination end makes that tougher. DIY travel planning takes some work to get the great deals, but you save a ton of money doing it yourself! As an added bonus you get to know where you’re going before you’re there. Even researching flights will give you an idea of when the airport receives/departs flights from your country or travel route. Very helpful info when planning the rest of your trip. Don’t forget to write it down!

Stay tuned as more details become available. Next on the list aside from reading the guidebooks until memorized and planning the trip, is learning more spanish and getting vaccinations.
